Rotomolded Kayaks
Rotational Molding is one
of the most cost effective methods to produce large, hollow objects and has
been used for many years to create such items as water and feed storage tanks
for agriculture as well as holding tanks for recreational vehicles.
Basically, a two-piece mold whose internal surfaces have been designed to reflect the desired outside surfaces of the finished product will be loaded with granulated polyethylene and this mold will be placed into an industrial oven.
The mold and sometimes the oven will be rotated so that the polyethylene granules inside will come into contact with the entire inside surface of the mold many times during the "cooking" cycle. As the mold reaches the melting temperature of the polyethylene, the poly particles begin to melt and stick to the inside surface of the mold and this continues until all of the polyethylene particles are melted together.
The mold is then moved to a cooling station and when cooled, the mold halves are separated exposing a one piece, seamless hollow product. This product then moves to a finishing department for trimming and addition of accessories.
